Former Big Brother Naija star, Uriel Oputa, has criticised the growing trend of using cancer-related claims to create online content, describing it as disturbing and a trivialisation of a life-threatening disease.

Oputa’s reaction comes amid controversy surrounding media personality Blessing Okoro, who recently announced she is battling stage four breast cancer, a claim that has sparked widespread debate and accusations of clout-chasing on social media.

Speaking on the issue, Oputa—whose mother is a breast cancer survivor—emphasised the need for sensitivity and respect when discussing serious health conditions. She warned against exploiting such illnesses for attention or engagement online.

She also raised concerns over the lack of clarity in the claim, noting that the term “stage 4” was used without sufficient explanation, which she said undermines the gravity of the condition.

While acknowledging that the situation, if true, warrants empathy and support, Oputa condemned the wave of online backlash directed at Blessing, stressing that no one deserves abuse over such a serious matter.

“But if this is not true, then this is actually disturbing. There are certain things you joke about, and there are certain things you don’t touch — this is one of them,” she said.

Drawing from personal experience, Oputa revealed that the issue hits close to home, as her mother is currently battling breast cancer. She noted that the disease is not something to be taken lightly or used for entertainment.

“Cancer is not content. This is real life. If it’s true, I’m sending you strength. But if it’s not, this is not okay,” she added.

Citing global statistics, Oputa further highlighted the severity of the disease, noting that cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with millions of lives lost annually.

Her comments have since fueled ongoing conversations about responsibility, ethics, and sensitivity in the age of social media.
