Carlos Alcaraz maintained his flawless run in Melbourne by beating Tommy Paul 7-6(6),
6-4, 7-5 to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals without dropping a set.
The top seed now faces either Alex de Minaur or Alexander Bublik for a place in the last
four, and a win would make him the youngest man ever to complete a career Grand
Slam.
“He started really strong, really strong shots, it was a bit difficult at the start,” Alcaraz
said.
“But I knew I would have my chances… Overall it has been a really high level of tennis
from both sides, really happy I got it in straight sets.”
Alcaraz recovered after being broken in the opening game, forcing a tiebreak in the first
set and taking control after a 15-minute delay caused by a medical emergency in the
crowd.
He then held his nerve to close out the match in two hours and 44 minutes, with his
improved serve proving decisive.
