Arsenal have been laying the foundations for their Premier League title charge since
before pre-season, according to manager Mikel Arteta, as they prepare for a key clash
with Sunderland that could stretch their lead at the top to nine points.
The Gunners sit six points clear after three consecutive runners-up finishes, and Arteta
said belief inside the squad was established early.
“Before pre-season started, we started to prepare everything with the intention to be
where we are and make sure the players are convinced we’re going to achieve it,” he
said.
Arteta added that his players have stayed united and ignored outside pressure in the
title race.
“It’s an amazing group and they’re doing an incredible job so far. We are very excited
and privileged to have each other. We are going to enjoy it until the last day of the
season.”
Attention now turns to Sunderland, with Arteta warning of a difficult test against the
promoted side. “It’s going to be a really tough match. They’ve been in an incredible run
all season. We know the complexity of the match,” he said.
On team news, Arteta confirmed Bukayo Saka is improving but not yet ready to return,
Martin Odegaard remains sidelined, and Jurrien Timber is available.
He also described Mikel Merino’s long-term injury as “a big blow”, adding that the
midfielder will continue to play an important role around the squad.
