Nollywood actress Tomi Ojo has opened up about her unconventional journey into the Nigerian film industry, revealing how frequent childhood relocations, curiosity about human behaviour, and a passion for storytelling shaped her path from modelling to acting.

Speaking with FAITH AJAYI, Ojo recounted growing up across several Nigerian cities, including Lagos, Ibadan, and Abuja, describing how the constant movement forced her to become independent early in life. She said the lack of stability in her upbringing pushed her to “figure herself out” and carve a personal path in life and creativity.

Unlike many Nollywood actors who attended film school, Ojo said her interest in storytelling was largely self-directed. Though she considered studying psychology, her fascination with human behaviour and lived experiences became the foundation of her approach to acting. She explained that her relationship with film has always been driven by passion rather than formal training.

Ojo revealed that acting was not always her end goal. She initially explored multiple creative interests, including writing, directing, photography, music, and hospitality. However, she realised acting could become a long-term career in her early twenties, citing American actress Viola Davis’ performance in How to Get Away with Murder as a major turning point that inspired her to pursue acting professionally.

Before acting, Ojo dabbled in modelling, collaborating with photographers for portfolio shoots and face modelling. She noted that although agencies initially discouraged her due to height requirements, she still hopes to pursue runway modelling in the future.

She said acting eventually offered her more emotional depth and creative freedom than modelling, allowing her to explore complex emotions and storytelling. Her entry into Nollywood began with auditions for an Africa Magic series, where she connected with industry professionals and landed early roles, learning quickly that the industry required resilience and adaptability.

Ojo acknowledged the challenges of breaking into Nollywood without industry godfathers, revealing that she worked behind the scenes as a production manager and crew member during slow periods. She described that phase as a learning curve that taught her when to stay, speak up, or walk away from unhealthy situations.

The actress admitted to experiencing moments of doubt but said acting served as an emotional outlet and a tool for personal growth. She credited her friends and support system for helping her stay grounded during difficult times.

Reflecting on her career, Ojo said projects like Stitches and Leaked pushed her creatively and emotionally, while recent epic film roles have allowed her to explore stronger, more mature characters. She noted that she is now intentionally positioning herself for action, psychological thriller, and epic roles, stating that she is done with schoolgirl characters.

Looking ahead, Ojo said she dreams of starring in action-packed projects like The Woman King or Avengers, playing culturally rich royal characters, and exploring the horror genre. She also revealed that a recent epic film shot in December 2025 challenged her physically and mentally, requiring her to learn old Yoruba with the help of a language coach.

Outside the spotlight, Ojo said she prefers quiet spaces, intimate gatherings, and beach outings to unwind. She described the biggest benefit of fame as public appreciation, while noting that constant visibility can be a hidden cost.

The actress also spoke about setting boundaries as a young woman in the public eye, emphasising the importance of protecting her peace, self-worth, and mental health. She urged young creatives to pursue their dreams wisely, seek financial stability, remain open to learning, and stay focused on their individual journeys.
