Sixteen lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly have dumped the Peoples Democratic Party and joined the All Progressives Congress.
The defectors, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, made their move public during Friday’s plenary. Amaewhule said the switch was driven by what he called a clear division within the PDP.
Their defection marks a major shift in the political landscape of the Assembly, strengthening the APC’s presence as tensions continue to rise in the state’s political space. The development is expected to influence legislative dynamics in the weeks ahead.
Reactions have begun trickling in from political actors and observers, with many noting that the move could further escalate the ongoing power tussle in Rivers State. The PDP is yet to issue an official response.
