Lekki–Epe Repairs Begin Sunday: Lagos Unveils Diversions, Counterflow Plans
Motorists using the Lekki–Epe Expressway will experience phased traffic adjustments from Sunday as the Lagos State Government begins refurbishment of a 20-kilometre segment of the road, a project projected to last roughly two months.
While inspecting the route, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the state would manage traffic around selected junctions as work progresses, stressing that the expressway would remain open and not be subjected to a blanket closure during the rehabilitation period.
He explained that the first phase, tagged Intersection One, would run from Chevron to Igbo-Efon, with work to be carried out on the Lagos-bound carriageway using a structured eight-intersection phased approach.
“To facilitate construction while maintaining vehicular movement, the Lagos-bound carriageway will be closed in segments,” Osiyemi said.
He added that traffic would be diverted to the Epe-bound carriageway through a dynamic lane-sharing system, particularly during the morning peak period from 4.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m.
According to him, two lanes would be made available to motorists on the Lagos-bound carriageway, while one lane would be accessible on the Epe-bound side.
“Road shoulders on the Epe-bound side are being graded to augment space for these diversions,” he said.
Osiyemi urged motorists to avoid the Lekki–Epe Expressway where possible during the construction period, pointing them to alternative routes such as access to the Coastal Road through Ogombo and the Abraham Adesanya axis. He also mentioned another diversion that connects the Coastal Road from the Eleganza area through Orchid, Lafiaji and Naale Street.
The commissioner said the state would deploy traffic officers, install directional signs, provide adequate lighting and enforce safety measures throughout the project to reduce disruptions to road users. He added that engagement with key stakeholders, including the Lekki–Epe Residents Association, was ongoing to ensure residents and commuters were adequately informed about the works.
Separately, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, disclosed via a post on X on Tuesday that a joint inspection of the expressway had been conducted ahead of the rehabilitation. According to him, the exercise involved officials from the Ministry of Transportation and the Office of Infrastructure, alongside the Commissioner for Transportation and the Special Adviser on Infrastructure.
Giwa said the project would be carried out in stages at major junctions, with traffic diversions, peak-hour counterflow plans, and round-the-clock construction activities put in place to manage movement during the rehabilitation period.
