Omotola: “Dancing to Promote Movies Is Fine—But Don’t Force Actors”

Veteran Nollywood actress and filmmaker Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has weighed in on the growing trend of using dance videos to promote movies, saying she has no issue with it—so long as it is natural and not forced.

Speaking during a recent appearance on TVC Entertainment, Omotola explained that the backlash against dance-driven promotions stems from pressure placed on actors to participate, rather than spontaneous enjoyment.

“I’m sorry, I would not be doing the dancing. It’s just not me. I dance, I love to dance, but the problem is when you feel like you have to,” she said.

She noted that dancing can be fun when it happens organically during promotional activities, but becomes problematic when it turns into an obligation.

“When it becomes a chore, when it becomes something you must do to sell a movie, it’s not professional,” she added.

Omotola emphasised that her primary responsibility is acting, while marketing should be handled by industry professionals.

“I already did the project. I should talk about it and promote it, then let distributors and advertisers do their jobs,” she said.

Her comments follow similar remarks by filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, who recently said he would not dance to promote a movie and questioned the profitability of producing billion-naira films with minimal returns.
