PDP Denies Alliance Talks With ADC, Says Turaki Group Acted Alone

Fresh cracks have emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after a faction aligned with Nyesom Wike distanced the party from a high-profile meeting between another PDP bloc and leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the engagement as unauthorised.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the PDP faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, said the party neither sanctioned nor participated in the meeting, insisting that those involved acted in their personal capacities. He urged members and the public to disregard any claims suggesting an official alliance or dialogue between the PDP and ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development follows a closed-door meeting in Abuja involving a delegation linked to Taminu Turaki, which paid what it described as a solidarity visit to the ADC leadership led by David Mark. The gathering, which lasted about two hours, drew prominent opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso and Rotimi Amaechi, fuelling speculation about a potential coalition to challenge the ruling party in 2027.

Also present were former Minister of Information Jerry Gana and ex-Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, alongside ADC officials such as Rauf Aregbesola and former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami.

However, the Wike-backed faction dismissed the meeting as politically inconsequential, reiterating that the PDP remains focused on its internal processes, including preparations for its forthcoming primaries. The statement emphasised that timelines and guidelines for party activities would be communicated in due course.

The disagreement underscores lingering divisions within the PDP since the 2023 elections, with rival camps jostling for control and strategic direction. Political observers say the emergence of parallel engagements with opposition parties reflects broader efforts to reshape alliances ahead of 2027.

As opposition figures continue to explore coalition options, the PDP’s internal cohesion remains a critical factor that could determine its competitiveness in the next electoral cycle.
