Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United were both left to rue missed chances after a 1-1 draw at the Parc des Princes proved insufficient to secure a top-eight finish in the UEFA Champions League.

PSG flew out of the blocks and were handed a penalty inside a minute, but Nick Pope produced a superb save to deny Ousmane Dembélé. The hosts soon made their dominance count as Vitinha curled in a fine opener from the edge of the box.

The French champions pressed for a second, only to be frustrated repeatedly by Pope, and they were punished in first-half stoppage time when Joe Willock nodded home from close range to level for Newcastle.

Willock thought he had completed the turnaround early in the second half, but his effort was ruled out for offside. PSG controlled possession thereafter but grew increasingly tense, while Newcastle nearly snatched victory late on, Harvey Barnes missing a golden chance from close range.

In the end, the draw suited neither side, as results elsewhere meant both PSG and Newcastle missed out on the top eight and must now navigate the knockout play-offs
