Following an internal probe, the military high command has confirmed that some officers have been found culpable of alleged misconduct, including claims of a plot to overthrow the government, and will face trial before a designated military tribunal.

Officials within the security establishment disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has voiced trust in the armed forces’ ability to handle the matter through established judicial processes.

The development follows calls from a civil society organisation pressing the Federal Government to pay attention to the medical condition and general wellbeing of personnel currently in custody over the allegations.

It will be recalled that in October 2025, the Defence Headquarters disclosed that 16 officers had been taken into custody for violations bordering on insubordination and other service-related offences.

Shortly after, Sahara Reporters alleged that the officers, ranging from the rank of Captain to Brigadier General were arrested by the Defence Intelligence Agency for holding secret meetings to topple the government, and linked the alleged plot to the cancellation of the October 1 Independence Day parade.

At the time, the then Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau (retd), dismissed the report as an attempt to create tension and distrust, stating that the matter was a purely internal disciplinary issue.

He said an investigative panel had been constituted and that its findings would be made public.

An update issued on Monday by the newly appointed Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, confirmed that the military has concluded a thorough probe into the alleged misconduct and submitted its findings to the relevant higher authority.

Uba disclosed that the investigation uncovered evidence against several officers accused of involvement in an alleged plan to topple the government, an action he said runs contrary to the core principles, discipline, and professional code of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

He explained that the inquiry, conducted strictly in line with established military procedures, followed the Defence Headquarters’ October 2025 announcement on the arrest of 16 officers for acts bordering on indiscipline and violations of service rules.

According to him, those found culpable will be charged before appropriate military judicial panels and tried in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable regulations.

Uba stressed that the process is designed to enforce accountability while guaranteeing fairness, transparency, and adherence to due process.
