Aso Rock Presidential Villa to Disconnect from National Grid by March 2026.
The Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja is poised to completely disconnect from Nigeria’s national electricity grid by March 2026, following the successful completion and testing of its solar mini grid, according to State House Permanent Secretary Temitope Fashedemi.
The solar installation, finalized in late 2025, has passed technical trials, and officials are optimistic about relying solely on the system within the first quarter of 2026.
The project received N10 billion in the 2025 budget, along with an additional N7 billion in the 2026 appropriation to ensure its successful completion. Officials believe this initiative will reduce electricity costs, decrease reliance on diesel generators, and alleviate pressure on the national grid, which has faced ongoing challenges.
Fashedemi highlighted the State House Medical Centre’s transition to solar power earlier in 2025 as a successful model, where battery storage and minimal grid supply have enabled continuous operations.
The shift to solar also aims to tackle issues related to excessively high electricity bills and allegations of overbilling by power distributors. Once fully operational, the Villa will significantly reduce its aging generators, retaining only a few for emergency backup, setting a precedent for sustainable energy use in government facilities.
The government asserts that this project forms part of broader efforts to diversify energy sources, lower operational costs, and promote the adoption of renewable energy in Nigeria’s key institutions.
