The Lagos State Government has firmly stated that it will not lift the ban on small buses, known locally as korope, operating in the Lekki-Epe corridor, despite ongoing protests and concerns from transport operators citing economic difficulties.

Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, conveyed this message during a meeting with stakeholders, emphasizing that the decision is part of a larger Bus Reform Initiative aimed at enhancing safety and order on the heavily trafficked expressway.

Giwa explained that the Lekki-Epe corridor was chosen for these reforms due to its rapid development and increasing population, which have led to more incidents linked to unregulated transport services. He noted that allowing small buses and tricycles to operate in this area would hinder efforts to establish an efficient and organized transport system suitable for a megacity like Lagos.

While Giwa acknowledged the challenges faced by korope operators, who argue that the ban exacerbates their economic struggles, he clarified that the policy aims to protect commuters and promote long-term sustainability in the transport sector.

“This ban will not be reversed. These reforms are essential for ensuring safety and order for all residents using the Lekki-Epe corridor,” Giwa asserted.

The government reiterated that it had previously engaged with affected operators, encouraging them to form cooperatives or structured transport companies to comply with the new regulations. Authorities also mentioned that many operators have undergone profiling and biometric data collection to enhance security and streamline operations.

In response to recent protests that disrupted traffic and left many commuters stranded, security agencies were deployed to restore order. Officials characterized these disruptions as regrettable but emphasized that while dialogue remains open, the policy will not be altered.

This reaffirmed stance illustrates the government’s commitment to advancing transport reforms, despite pushback from operators facing economic challenges.
