Emergency responders were deployed after flames were reported at the old terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, a section of the facility currently undergoing a multi-billion-naira renovation.

While the exact cause and extent of damage had yet to be confirmed as of press time, the affected terminal forms part of the airport’s ageing infrastructure being upgraded to enhance passenger comfort and modernise operations.

Reacting to the development, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Henry Agbebire, said emergency teams were already on site working to contain the situation.

“We are aware of the outbreak, and we are there right now. We will publish a statement right now,” he stated.

He added that the agency’s emergency response unit had swung into action to prevent further damage.

“Our firefighting team is currently responding and working to curtail the situation,” he said.

Agbebire assured the public that there were no casualties from the incident.

The authority noted that investigations would be conducted to determine the cause of the incident, while safety assessments are expected to guide the next steps in the ongoing renovation works.

Officials also reassured travellers and airport users that normal operations around unaffected sections of the facility would continue, with additional monitoring put in place to forestall any recurrence.
