Strasbourg halted Lyon’s 13-match winning streak on Sunday with a deserved 2-1
victory at the Stade de la Meinau, denting the visitors’ fading Ligue 1 title hopes and
reviving their own push for European qualification.
The hosts, winless in three league games before kick-off, started brightly and were
rewarded before the break when Martial Godo finished off Diego Moreira’s chipped
pass after earlier chances had been denied by Lyon goalkeeper Dominik Greif.
Strasbourg doubled their lead after the interval as Moreira’s long-range effort, aided
by a deflection off Tanner Tessmann, found the bottom corner. Lyon pulled one back
with their first shot on target, Corentin Tolisso controlling superbly before volleying
past Mike Penders.
A late VAR review handed Strasbourg a penalty for Clinton Mata’s foul on Samir El
Mourabet, and Joaquín Panichelli sealed the win from the spot.
The result keeps Strasbourg firmly in the hunt for Europe, while Lyon’s impressive
run comes to an abrupt end with their title ambitions now all but over.
