Iran produced another disciplined display to earn a 0-0 draw against 10-man Belgium on Sunday, securing an unbeaten start to their World Cup campaign for the first time in the nation’s history.

Belgium dominated possession for long periods in Los Angeles, but Iran proved dangerous on the counterattack and were unfortunate not to find the net.

Mehdi Taremi thought he had given his side the lead in the first half after a clever free-kick routine, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside.

Goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand was once again Iran’s standout performer, making a series of crucial saves to deny Maxim De Cuyper, Kevin De Bruyne and Youri Tielemans as the Red Devils searched for a breakthrough.

Iran also created several opportunities of their own, with Hossein Kanani forcing an excellent save from Thibaut Courtois before Taremi tested the Belgian goalkeeper after the break.

The turning point arrived midway through the second half when Nathan Ngoy underhit a backpass and brought down Taremi as the striker raced through on goal.

Referee Dario Herrera showed a straight red card, leaving Belgium to play the remainder of the contest with 10 men.

Despite their numerical advantage, Iran could not find a winner, although coach Amir Ghalenoei will be pleased with another resilient performance from his experienced side.

The draw leaves both teams on two points after two matches. Iran remain firmly in contention for a place in the Round of 32 ahead of a decisive clash with Egypt, while Belgium must defeat New Zealand to keep their qualification hopes alive.
