President Bola Tinubu on Friday inaugurated four major Compressed Natural Gas infrastructure projects across Lagos, Abuja and Owerri as part of the Federal Government’s push to expand clean transportation infrastructure and deepen domestic gas utilisation.

The projects, delivered under the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund, form part of the government’s response to fuel subsidy reforms and broader efforts to reduce transportation costs while promoting cleaner energy alternatives.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.

The projects were inaugurated virtually as part of activities marking the third anniversary of the Tinubu administration.

In Lagos, the president commissioned the Portland Gas CNG Mother Station located in Ojota. The facility has a daily dispensing capacity of 96,000 standard cubic metres and includes two skid trucks for gas distribution, a 54-metric-tonne Liquefied CNG storage facility, and a linked daughter station in Kubwa, Abuja.

Tinubu also inaugurated the IBILE Oil and Gas Corporation CNG Refuelling Station in Lagos, which serves as part of a planned network of 15 refuelling stations across the state.

According to the Presidency, the network is expected to provide more affordable fuel alternatives, lower transportation costs and reduce vehicular emissions within the country’s commercial hub.

In Abuja, the president commissioned the High-Capacity CNG Daughter Booster Station developed by Rolling Energy Limited in partnership with MDGIF.

The facility, described as one of the largest and most advanced in West Africa, is equipped with high-capacity compressors, storage systems and dispensing units capable of serving up to 1,000 vehicles daily.

The station also includes a mass vehicle conversion centre with eight conversion pits capable of converting up to 20 vehicles and 25 tricycles daily.

At the Federal University of Technology Owerri, Tinubu inaugurated the FEMADEC CNG Daughter Station and Conversion Centre under the Special Palliative Relief on University Transportation programme.

The project is part of a nationwide initiative aimed at establishing CNG ecosystems in 20 Nigerian universities and includes CNG-powered buses, tricycles, conversion facilities and training centres to support affordable transportation for students and staff.

The Federal Government also disclosed that it had partnered with financial institutions through the Credit Access for Light and Mobility Fund to provide affordable financing for vehicle conversion to CNG.

Speaking during the inauguration, Tinubu said Nigeria’s energy future would be built around its vast gas resources rather than dependence on imported energy alternatives.

Nigeria is a gas nation. Our energy future will not be borrowed. It will be built from what we have, and every project we are commissioning today is proof that we are building it,” the president stated.

He described the projects as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s clean transport and energy transition agenda, adding that they would help reduce transportation costs while improving energy security.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, said the projects highlighted the government’s commitment to positioning domestic gas as the foundation of Nigeria’s energy transition and economic development strategy.

The Executive Director of MDGIF, Oluwole Adama, also described the projects as evidence of successful collaboration between government agencies, regulators, investors and technical partners.
