Tight Security in Ikere-Ekiti as Residents Prepare for Governorship Election
A heavy security presence was observed across Ikere-Ekiti on Saturday as voters prepared to participate in the Ekiti State governorship election, with authorities enforcing strict movement restrictions and deploying personnel to strategic locations across the town.
Security operatives drawn from the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were stationed at major roads, junctions and public facilities to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process.
Ikere-Ekiti, one of the largest towns in the state, is expected to attract significant attention during the election because of its political importance. The town is home to the All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy governorship candidate, Mrs Monisade Afuye, as well as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Oluwole Oluyede.
Political observers consider the area a key battleground in the contest, given its influence on voting patterns and the prominence of the two major candidates connected to the community.
Reports from the town indicated that security agencies established checkpoints at both entry and exit routes leading into Ikere-Ekiti as part of efforts to enforce the restriction of movement announced for election day. Vehicles and motorcycles were prevented from moving freely within the area, while residents were permitted to walk to their destinations.
The measure is aimed at reducing the possibility of electoral malpractice, vote buying, transportation of political thugs and other activities that could disrupt the conduct of the election.
Commercial activities were also largely suspended across the town. Shops, restaurants and other business premises remained closed as residents complied with the election-day directive issued by authorities.
Despite the restrictions, accredited journalists covering the governorship poll were allowed access to the area after presenting identification and vehicles bearing official Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) accreditation stickers.
The Ekiti governorship election is being closely monitored by political stakeholders, civil society organisations and election observers, who view the exercise as an important test of Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of future elections across the country.
INEC had earlier assured voters of adequate preparations for the poll, including the deployment of election materials and personnel to polling units across the state. Security agencies also pledged to maintain law and order before, during and after voting.
Over the years, governorship elections in Ekiti have attracted national attention due to the state’s politically active electorate and history of highly competitive contests between major political parties. The outcome of the election is expected to shape the state’s political direction and influence party strategies ahead of subsequent electoral cycles.
As voting commenced across the state, residents expressed hope that the election would be conducted peacefully and reflect the will of the people. Security officials maintained visible patrols throughout Ikere-Ekiti, while electoral officials continued preparations for the opening of polling units.
Authorities have urged voters to remain law-abiding, avoid acts capable of disrupting the process and cooperate with security personnel to ensure a credible and peaceful election.
