DE LA FUENTE DEFENDS SPAIN AFTER WIN OVER SAUDI ARABIA

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente hit back at critics after his side responded to early World Cup scrutiny with a dominant 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia on Sunday, insisting it is “crazy” to question his team.

After a slow start to their campaign with a goalless draw against Cape Verde, Spain were under pressure heading into the clash, but a commanding performance inspired by the return of Lamine Yamal restored belief in their title credentials.

“I think it’s crazy to question this team,” De la Fuente said. “We have been unbeaten for 33 consecutive games. You can have better days, worse days, normal days, but questioning this generation is unfair.”

Spain delivered their strongest statement yet, with Mikel Oyarzabal playing a decisive role. The forward provided an assist and scored twice inside the first half hour as Spain overwhelmed Saudi Arabia from the start.

Oyarzabal’s performance saw him become only the second player since 1966 to register three goal involvements in the opening 25 minutes of a World Cup match.

“The impact Mikel has on the team is massive, probably bigger than any other player could have in the world,” De la Fuente said. “His numbers are crazy.”

De la Fuente also admitted the criticism fuelled his players’ response.

“Their pride was hurt, of course, because this is not a reality,” he said. “Those remarks sometimes make them react, and that’s good because it’s a very committed, dedicated team.”

Spain now sit on four points in Group H after two matches, putting them in a strong position to reach the knockout stage ahead of their final group game against Uruguay.

Saudi Arabia remain on one point, while Cape Verde and Uruguay are level on two points each.
