Sheikh Gumi Criticizes US Airstrikes on Nigerian Soil.

In a bold statement, renowned Islamic cleric Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi popularly known as Sheikh Gumi has voiced strong objections to the recent airstrikes conducted by the United States in north-western Nigeria, calling them a potential threat to national sovereignty and unity. This comes on the heels of US President Donald Trump’s announcement that American forces executed “numerous deadly strikes” targeting Islamic State militants believed to be attacking Christians in the region.

While the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed ongoing collaborations with the US that include intelligence sharing and strategic coordination, Gumi contends that such foreign military interventions could be detrimental to the nation’s security landscape. He emphasized that the fight against terrorism is an Islamic obligation, as per teachings of the Prophet Muhammad; however, he cautioned that this duty should not be outsourced to foreign powers with questionable motives.

In a post on his verified Facebook account, Gumi articulated his concerns, stating, “Annihilating terrorists is an Islamic obligation. However, this should only be carried out by clean, holy hands, not by another terrorist whose hands are stained with the blood of innocent civilians.” He went on to warn that the presence of US military forces in Nigeria could attract anti-American sentiments, transforming the country into a battleground for external conflicts.

Gumi urged the Federal Government to seek assistance from nations like China, Turkey, and Pakistan, suggesting that they could provide effective military support without compromising Nigeria’s sovereignty. He argued that the US military’s justification for its actions as a means of “protecting Christians” could exacerbate existing religious divides, further polarizing the nation.

“The USA’s involvement in Nigeria will ultimately infringe on our sovereignty and polarize our nation along religious lines,” Gumi cautioned. He warned that no sovereign nation should allow its territory to become a theatre of war, advocating for solutions that prioritize both national unity and civilian protection.

As Nigeria grapples with its ongoing battle against terrorism, Gumi’s statements resonate with a growing sentiment among some leaders and citizens who fear that foreign intervention may complicate an already volatile situation. The call for a reassessment of international military partnerships is gaining traction, highlighting the delicate balance between seeking assistance and maintaining national integrity.
