USA ADVANCE INTO LAST 32 AFTER COMFORTABLE WIN OVER AUSTRALIA
The United States secured their place in the World Cup round of 32 with a composed 2-0 victory over Australia in Seattle, continuing their strong momentum under head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
Coming just days after a convincing 4-1 win over Paraguay, the result means the USA have now recorded back-to-back World Cup victories for the first time since 1930. They have scored six goals and conceded just once in the group stage, underlining their control of Group D.
Despite the impressive run, Pochettino insisted the team’s mentality has not shifted, urging consistency and continued hard work.
“We need to keep believing, like from day one, that we can win – knowing that we have to work really hard, and at the same time, enjoy the time together,” he said.
“This (win) has not changed my views or my dreams… I think it’s much better when you show good performances and win the games… We need to go for the next one,” he added.
The coach also praised his attacking options, particularly Folarin Balogun and Ricardo Pepi, who led the line in the absence of Christian Pulisic.
“Ricardo, for me, is one of the greatest strikers in the world. He is getting better and better every day,” Pochettino said.
Seattle continues to be a stronghold for the USMNT, with the team now winning all seven matches played in the city. The players celebrated with fans after full-time, with Pochettino admitting the atmosphere moved him emotionally.
“The warm reception and the way they celebrated the victory, they made me feel very emotional,” he said.
The USA now head to Los Angeles for their final group match against Turkey on June 25, where a win could secure top spot in Group D.
