SCALONI SPEECHLESS AS MESSI SETS NEW WORLD CUP SCORING RECORD.
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni admitted he is growing tired of answering questions
about Lionel Messi after the captain became the World Cup’s all-time leading
goalscorer in Monday’s 2-0 win over Austria.
Messi missed an early penalty but responded with both goals as Argentina secured
victory and a place in the knockout rounds. The brace took the Inter Miami star to 18
World Cup goals, moving him past Miroslav Klose (16) and Marta (17) into sole
possession of the all-time scoring record.
“I have no more words to talk about Leo,” Scaloni said. “It makes us a little bit tired
talking about him all the time.”
The Argentina boss was equally impressed by Messi’s work rate, praising his
commitment when the team came under pressure.
“When the team was having a rough time without the ball, he worked; he managed to
steal the ball. You could see his level of commitment,” Scaloni added.
Despite qualifying for the Round of 32 with back-to-back wins, Scaloni warned that
the defending champions still face a difficult road ahead.
“There are so many teams that can win,” he said. “We will be there, we will be one of
the contenders, but it will be hard facing one of these big teams. But it will be hard
for them facing us.”
Argentina top of Group J with six points and has already secured its place in the
knockout stages.
