Lagos, Nigeria – April 9, 2025 – The Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE) marked a significant milestone as Engineer Azeez Abayomi Agoro (MNSE, FNIEE) was inaugurated as its 6th Chairman during a prestigious ceremony held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in GRA Ikeja, Lagos. The event brought together industry professionals, family, and colleagues who gathered to witness the transition of leadership and to hear Engr. Agoro’s inaugural speech.

In his address, Engr. Agoro expressed profound gratitude for the trust placed in him and acknowledged the support from his family, mentors, and professional colleagues throughout his journey. He highlighted the theme of the inauguration, “Driving Climate-Friendly Clean Energy for Sustainable Economic Growth,” emphasizing the urgent need for environmental engineering practices amid ongoing global challenges such as climate change, pollution, and energy crises.

“Here in Lagos, with its unique environmental dynamics and a population exceeding 20 million, we must lead the way in implementing innovative and sustainable solutions that will protect our environment for future generations,” Agoro stated. He acknowledged the foundational work done by his predecessors in promoting environmental sustainability and pledged to build upon their achievements.

Engr. Agoro outlined a vision for his tenure focused on increasing public awareness and engagement in environmental matters. He stressed the importance of collective responsibility among public and private entities in driving sustainability, stating that safeguarding the environment should involve every citizen, organization, and policymaker. To this end, he announced plans for workshops, seminars, and outreach programs aimed at educating the public about environmental protection.

The new chairman reaffirmed the significance of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) in ensuring sustainable development, calling for enhanced compliance and transparency in development projects. He emphasized that environmental protection is a shared duty, advocating for collaboration among government, industries, communities, and individuals.

Capacity building and mentorship also emerged as key priorities in Agoro’s agenda. He underscored the need to cultivate the next generation of environmental engineers through professional development programs and partnerships with academic institutions. “The future of environmental engineering rests on the shoulders of the next generation,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of equipping young engineers with the skills to address emerging challenges.

In closing, Engr. Agoro expressed heartfelt appreciation to all those who supported his journey, reaffirming his commitment to lead with integrity, professionalism, and excellence. He called on every member of NIEE to unite in pursuit of a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for Lagos State.
