Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide and prominent social commentator has come to the defense of the Federal Government following criticisms over the installation of a ₦10 billion solar power system at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.
Speaking on the development, Omokri characterized critics of the project as “small-picture thinkers,” urging Nigerians to view the initiative through the lens of long-term sustainability rather than immediate cost. He pointed out that the government reportedly spends between ₦1.5 billion and ₦2 billion annually on electricity bills for the Villa—suggesting that the switch to solar energy would prove to be a cost-effective move over time.
Drawing from history, Omokri cited a controversial statement by colonial-era figure; Lord Frederick Lugard who once characterized Africans as “happy, thriftless, excitable,” and challenged citizens to reflect on whether such outdated stereotypes still influence perceptions today. He urged Nigerians to verify the reported cost of the solar project and to make comparisons with similar renewable energy upgrades at prestigious residences such as the White House in Washington, D.C. and Buckingham Palace in London.
Omokri further lauded President Bola Tinubu for taking a bold step toward promoting green energy at the nation’s seat of power. The project, according to him, represents a forward-thinking investment that aligns with global trends in renewable energy and environmental responsibility.
