The national electricity grid suffered another collapse on Wednesday, plunging parts of the country into blackout.
In a notice issued on September 10, 2025, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident via its official X handle.
According to AEDC, the disruption occurred at about 11:23 a.m., leading to a total loss of supply across its franchise areas.
The statement read:
“Please be informed that the current power outage is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 a.m. today, affecting electricity supply in our coverage zones. Rest assured, we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to restore supply once the grid is stabilised.”
The company urged customers to remain patient while restoration efforts continue, providing contact numbers for further inquiries.
Nigeria’s electricity grid has suffered repeated collapses over the years, with 12 cases recorded in 2024 alone and more than 100 in the past decade. A major outage earlier in February this year left large swathes of the country in darkness.
Amid the recurrent failures, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in April approved licences for six companies and a private university to generate and distribute their own electricity. However, in its July 2025 report, NERC noted that no grid disturbance was recorded in the first quarter of the year.
