The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is currently interrogating former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, over allegations of financial misconduct linked to a $7.2 billion refinery turnaround maintenance project.

Sources within the agency confirmed that Kyari is at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, where he is being questioned by investigators.

“He is here with our investigators at the moment. That is all I can say for now,” an EFCC source disclosed.

Kyari was reportedly invited to explain financial transactions worth several billions of dollars executed during his tenure as NNPCL GMD.

The probe comes amid ongoing scrutiny of funds allocated to Nigeria’s refineries, which remain dormant despite multiple turnaround maintenance efforts.

Kyari, who had previously been placed on the EFCC watchlist over the controversial programme, also has four bank accounts temporarily frozen following a recent order by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Appointed in 2019, Kyari oversaw major reforms that converted the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation into a limited liability company before his replacement in July 2024.
