A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Buba Galadima has cautioned that Nigeria could be plunged into unrest if the Federal Government proceeds with an alleged plan to appoint a retired Court of Appeal judge as the next chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Monday, Galadima expressed deep concern over what he described as growing speculation about the proposed appointment.

“Come November, there are rumours everywhere that this government is nominating a just-retired Court of Appeal judge, who is notorious, to head INEC,” he said. “I hope it is not true, because if that man becomes INEC chairman, this government would be inviting a civil war.”

Galadima accused the administration of showing disregard for the rule of law and claimed that the current INEC leadership had already been compromised in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The INEC chairman has already rigged the election for APC. They brought somebody who was the secretary of the party that went to court for APC, made him acting national chairman, and rewarded him with INEC chairmanship,” he alleged.

He warned that such moves could completely erode confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process and lead to instability.

“If this man is appointed, forget about elections in Nigeria, there will be chaos,” Galadima said, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and resist allowing individuals with questionable integrity to preside over the nation’s electoral system.
