The newly installed Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to approve the creation of a separate Ibadan State ahead of 2027.
Speaking in Yoruba during the presentation of the Staff of Office by Governor Seyi Makinde, Oba Ladoja relayed what he said was the desire of his people. He told President Tinubu: “My people sent me a message to Mr President. Mr President, they said the creation of Ibadan State is their priority.”
Governor Makinde, in his remarks, lauded the occasion as one of great honour for Ibadan and Oyo State. He emphasised that the coronation and the Staff of Office presentation reaffirmed the traditions and stability of Ibadan’s chieftaincy system.
The demand for an “Ibadan State” has surfaced periodically in local discourse, particularly as Ibadan has grown in population, infrastructural complexity, and economic importance. Advocates argue that a more localized administrative structure could improve governance, resource allocation, and political representation.
Still, creating a new state in Nigeria requires constitutional and legislative approval at multiple levels: from the National Assembly, the relevant state government(s), and possibly a referendum.
