Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that he is willing to step aside if a younger aspirant emerges victorious in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary ahead of the 2027 elections.
In an interview with BBC Hausa, Atiku who previously contested the 2023 presidential election under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) said that while he has not formally confirmed a run in 2027, his immediate priority is to strengthen the ADC and foster unity among opposition parties.
He said: “If I run for office, and a young man defeats me, I will accept that. The party we have joined now prioritises youth and women.”
Atiku also denied rumors that he might play a “double game” by oscillating between the ADC and PDP, insisting that once he commits, he would remain consistent.
The 78-year-old politician had officially left the PDP in July 2025, citing irreconcilable differences and a deviation from the party’s founding principles.
