Manchester United Sack Amorim After 14 Months in Charge

Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim, with Darren Fletcher set to take charge of Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Burnley.

The decision comes less than 24 hours after Amorim publicly suggested his relationship with senior club figures was strained, following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds.

The Portuguese coach had indicated he wanted to work as a manager rather than simply a coach and hinted he would not be fully backed in the transfer market.

United confirmed on Monday that Amorim had departed his role after 14 months in charge, with the club citing league position as a key factor.

“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change,” a club statement said. “This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”

The club also thanked Amorim for his contribution and wished him well for the future.

Sources close to the club indicated there was concern over a lack of clear evolution or progress this season. Amorim, who was appointed in November 2024, won 25 of his 63 matches in charge.

His spell becomes the shortest reign of a permanent United manager since David Moyes was dismissed after eight months in 2014.
