Senator Adams Oshiomhole has emphasized that the government is not designed to generate profit; instead, it relies on taxes from citizens to operate efficiently and provide essential services.

In a recent interview with a television news outlet, Oshiomhole clarified that the role of government enterprises is to offer necessary services rather than to create profit for the state.

“The profit comes from individuals and businesses, which is why taxes are essential for the functioning of government,” Oshiomole remarked.

He pointed out that many Nigerians mistakenly believe the government generates its own revenue, asserting that public institutions are fundamentally intended to serve the populace and enhance their well-being, rather than operate as profit-driven entities.

“Government operations are focused on delivering services that are not profit-oriented. Their purpose is to improve the quality of life for citizens, which is achievable only through tax contributions,” he explained.

The former governor of Edo State further noted that while individuals and businesses are engaged in profit generation, the government relies on tax income to support governance, ensure security, and foster economic development.

“Individuals run businesses to earn money; the government does not. For effective governance, security, and economic growth, it is crucial for citizens to fulfill their tax obligations,” Adams Oshiomole concluded.
