‘Women Hold Nollywood Together’ — Omotola Speaks on Industry, Admiration and Marriage
Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has described women as the backbone of Nigeria’s film industry, saying they dominate key sectors and often juggle multiple businesses alongside their acting careers.
Speaking during a trending interview on Naija FM 102.7, which was later shared on YouTube, the award-winning actress reflected on the pivotal role women have played in sustaining Nollywood since its early years.
“Women are the ones who hold this industry, right from the start. Women are the ones who do well for this industry. Women are mostly the producers. Women are the ones who hold Nollywood really,” she said.
The screen icon also highlighted the strong entrepreneurial culture among female actors, noting that many run several businesses while balancing the demanding nature of film production. According to her, even newcomers in the industry often diversify their income streams through ventures such as influencing, modelling, retail, and other enterprises.
“I don’t know any female actor, even small ones who just entered this industry, that don’t get at least like three or four businesses,” she said, adding that the intensity of acting makes financial balance essential.
Comparing the experiences of male and female actors, Omotola noted that while men in the industry are admired, women tend to receive more intense public attention and support from fans and admirers.
“Male actors too dey try, but I don’t think it’s as intense as the women. Women get admirers. Men too get admirers wey dey help them, but women have more,” she stated.
The actress further revealed that she still receives gifts and support from admirers despite being married, stressing that the gestures come from both men and women. She, however, emphasised that her husband remains secure in their long-standing marriage.
Omotola, who has been married for over two decades, reiterated the importance of trust, balance, and stability in relationships, noting that her spouse’s confidence has been a key pillar in their union. Widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most celebrated figures, she has consistently advocated professionalism, entrepreneurship, and resilience among women in the film industry.
