Business leader and former chairperson of First Bank of Nigeria, Ibukun Awosika, has advised couples not to allow financial matters become a source of conflict in their homes, stressing that mutual understanding and unity are more important than wealth.

Awosika gave the advice during a sermon at Celebration Church International, in a message later shared on Instagram by pastor Emmanuel Iren. Drawing from her personal experience in marriage, she explained how differences in personality and financial outlook between her and her husband created stability rather than tension.

According to her, while she was a risk-taking entrepreneur running a manufacturing company, her husband, a petroleum engineer in the public sector of the oil and gas industry, was highly prudent and organised. She noted that this balance helped their household remain financially stable over the years.

“When I say make the money of no consequence in your home, I’m speaking from personal experience,” she said, adding that their complementary strengths ensured they never lacked despite the uncertainties that come with business risks.

Awosika further recounted how the couple relied on faith and long-term vision during the early years of their marriage, holding on to biblical promises while building their careers and family life. She revealed that years later, her husband and his colleagues applied for smaller oil fields made available to Nigerians after they were divested by major oil companies, eventually securing one.

She said the development reinforced the importance of patience, teamwork, and consistent behaviour in marriage, noting that the seeds sown in the early years often yield rewards later in life.

Emphasising her core message, Awosika urged couples to treat money as a tool rather than a source of division. She stressed that financial success in marriage is best achieved when both partners work together as a team, regardless of who earns more.

“Do not make money an issue in your home. It’s a tool. Use it to achieve the things that you can do together,” she said, adding that true partnership in marriage comes when couples understand their roles and operate in unity.

She concluded that a husband and wife who align their values, vision, and purpose are better positioned to overcome financial and life challenges together.
