Hypo Bleach Maker Raises Alarm Over Dangerous Social Media Trend Linked to Influencers
Multipro Enterprise Limited, manufacturers of Hypo Bleach, has issued a strong warning to Nigerians against consuming the product following a viral online controversy involving content creators King Mitchy and VeryDarkMan.
In a statement shared on Instagram, the company’s Marketing Manager, Adebayo Adeyemo, stressed that Hypo Bleach is strictly a household cleaning product and not meant for consumption under any circumstance.
According to the company, the product is formulated to remove stains, whiten fabrics, deodorise, and kill 99.9 per cent of germs, adding that it should never be treated as a beverage or used for social media trends.
Multipro expressed concern over the circulation of videos and AI-generated images online portraying Hypo sachets as drinkable substances, describing such content as fabricated, misleading, and potentially life-threatening. The company warned that encouraging people to consume bleach, even as a joke or for online engagement, poses serious health risks.
The clarification follows a heated online dispute between King Mitchy and VeryDarkMan, which reportedly sparked a disturbing trend where some creators began simulating suicide attempts using Hypo sachets in skits and viral videos.
The situation escalated further after a viral clip surfaced showing VeryDarkMan appearing to take a substance from a Hypo sachet, an action many viewers interpreted as a response to the growing trend. This, in turn, triggered a wave of imitation across social media platforms, with several content creators replicating similar scenes for views and engagement.
Multipro has now appealed to influencers, bloggers, and digital creators to exercise responsibility, noting that their online reach carries real-world consequences. The company emphasised that any trend capable of causing harm or promoting unsafe behaviour is dangerous and should not be encouraged.
The trend has drawn widespread backlash from parents, activists, and concerned citizens, who have described the content as disturbing and harmful, particularly to young and impressionable social media users.
Amid the growing concern, some stakeholders have also called on relevant authorities to take action against individuals promoting such content, warning that the trend could have serious mental health and safety implications if left unchecked.
