A political support group aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has begun arrangements for the nationwide distribution of rice to Nigerians observing the Ramadan and Lenten fasting periods.

The initiative, coordinated by the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, was announced on Saturday by its Director-General and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma. According to him, the distribution follows a directive from the President and is intended to provide support for families during a period that holds deep religious significance for both Muslims and Christians.

Uzodinma said the exercise reflects the administration’s commitment to fostering national unity and encouraging compassion among citizens.

He explained that Ramadan and Lent are periods traditionally associated with prayer, sacrifice and charity, adding that the intervention aims to ensure that vulnerable households are not left out during the fasting season.

Under the arrangement, the support group will work through its nationwide grassroots network to coordinate the distribution of rice to communities across the country. The programme is expected to reach households in both urban and rural areas, particularly those facing economic hardship.

Nigeria’s Muslim community is currently observing Ramadan, a month-long period of fasting and spiritual reflection, while many Christians are also observing Lent, a solemn season leading up to Easter that emphasises prayer, fasting and acts of charity.

Government officials say the initiative is designed to complement existing social support measures while promoting interfaith solidarity in a country where religion plays a central role in social life.

This is not the first time the group has organised such a distribution. During the 2025 Christmas season, the Renewed Hope Ambassadors coordinated a similar rice distribution across several states as part of efforts to support Nigerians during festive periods.

Analysts note that humanitarian and food support initiatives often increase during major religious observances in Nigeria, particularly as many households struggle with rising food prices and the cost of living.

By targeting both Muslim and Christian communities, organisers say the programme is intended to reinforce the message of unity and shared national values during one of the country’s most spiritually significant periods.
