Gospel Music Icon Toun Soetan Dies at 73, Tope Alabi Leads Tributes
Veteran Nigerian gospel singer Toun Soetan has passed away at the age of 73, drawing heartfelt tributes from across the gospel music community.
Popular gospel artiste Tope Alabi mourned the late singer in an emotional Instagram post, describing her as “a true spiritual mother and a matriarch in gospel music.”
According to Alabi, Soetan lived a life devoted to Christ and used her music ministry to inspire many believers.
“Her life was a reflection of Christ, and her impact in the gospel music ministry will never be forgotten. She lived for Christ and preached Him through her life and music. Though we will miss her, we are comforted knowing she has gone to be with the Lord. Rest well, Mama. Your legacy lives on,” Alabi wrote.
The news of Soetan’s passing was also confirmed on social media by gospel comedian Woli Agba on Friday.
Soetan, widely known for gospel songs such as “Train Up Your Child” and “Darling Jesus,” devoted more than four decades to gospel music. Born in Lagos and raised in a Muslim home, she converted to Christianity in 1974, a turning point that shaped her life and music ministry.
Over the years, she became a respected voice in Nigerian gospel music, mentoring younger artistes and inspiring many through her songs and faith.
She is survived by her husband, family members, and a wide community of gospel ministers and followers whose lives she touched through her music.
