Outrage as Women Allegedly Assaulted During Festival in Delta Community
Widespread outrage has erupted across Nigeria following reports of sexual assault against women during a traditional festival in Ozoro, headquarters of Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The incident occurred on Thursday, March 19, during the controversial ‘Alue-Do’ festival, a cultural event said to be associated with fertility rites and traditional beliefs in the community. Videos circulating on social media showed disturbing scenes of young women being chased, stripped and molested in public, prompting condemnation from rights groups and concerned citizens.
In one of the viral clips, a young woman was dragged off a motorcycle and attacked by a group of youths who tore her clothes, while another video showed a victim running for safety as assailants attempted to strip her. Several other recordings depicted women struggling to shield themselves from mobs.
Although the exact number of victims remains unclear, residents say the attacks were widespread, with many women reportedly forced to remain indoors to avoid harassment.
According to locals, the festival traditionally includes restrictions on women’s movement during certain periods. A female resident, who spoke anonymously, said announcements were made warning women not to go outdoors while the ritual was ongoing.
“We were told to stay inside. Many of us locked ourselves in for safety,” she said.
The development has raised renewed concerns about harmful cultural practices and gender-based violence in parts of Nigeria. Advocacy groups have long called for stronger enforcement of laws protecting women’s rights, including the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, which criminalises sexual assault and other forms of abuse.
Observers note that while cultural festivals play an important role in preserving heritage, they must not infringe on fundamental human rights or personal safety.
The incident reportedly led to the closure of businesses, with some non-indigenes leaving the area out of fear.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident, while calls for investigation and accountability continue to grow nationwide
