Okinbaloye Rejects Intimidation Fears, Defends Press Freedom After Wike Controversy

A prominent broadcaster with Channels Television, Seun Okinbaloye, has declared that he will not be intimidated following a controversy involving remarks by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, reaffirming his commitment to holding public officials accountable.

Speaking during a live broadcast on Sunday, Okinbaloye expressed appreciation for the widespread support he received from viewers, civil society organisations and advocacy groups, describing it as a strong endorsement of journalism rooted in truth and accountability.

The controversy arose after comments made by Wike during a media engagement in Abuja, where he criticised Okinbaloye’s remarks on a programme discussing opposition politics and concerns about a potential one-party state ahead of the 2027 elections. Although the minister later clarified that his comments were not intended as a threat, the exchange sparked public debate about press freedom and political tolerance.

Okinbaloye, however, warned that the use of inflammatory language by public officials could have unintended consequences, especially in a tense political environment. He stressed that democracy thrives on open dialogue and differing opinions, noting that attempts to silence dissent could weaken democratic institutions.

“I am not afraid, and I will not be intimidated,” he said, adding that journalism must remain independent and guided by ethical standards rather than political pressure.

He also revealed that he had received reassurances from security agencies, including the Department of State Services, regarding his safety, while acknowledging that Wike had reached out to clarify his position.

Reacting to the incident, Amnesty International Nigeria condemned the minister’s remarks, warning that such statements could embolden attacks on journalists and erode press freedom. The organisation called for greater responsibility in public discourse, especially from those in positions of authority.

The incident highlights growing tensions between the media and political actors in Nigeria, particularly as the country gradually moves toward another election cycle, where the role of independent journalism remains critical to transparency and democratic accountability.
