Yusuf Buhari Declares Interest in Reps Seat Ahead of 2027 Elections

Yusuf Buhari, the only son of Nigeria’s late former president Muhammadu Buhari, has formally declared his intention to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives in the 2027 general elections, signalling a new chapter in his political journey.

In a letter dated April 3, 2026, Yusuf announced his bid to represent the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua Federal Constituency of Katsina State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress. He said his decision followed consultations with political stakeholders and supporters across the constituency.

According to him, his ambition is driven by a desire to contribute to grassroots development, improve infrastructure, and enhance the welfare of constituents. The declaration positions him among a growing number of young Nigerians seeking elective office ahead of the next election cycle.

His entry into partisan politics comes just days after key APC stakeholders in Sandamu Local Government Area publicly endorsed him as their preferred candidate. The endorsement, announced during a high-level meeting attended by party leaders and political appointees, was described as a consensus decision aimed at strengthening the party’s chances in the constituency.

The council chairman, Usman Na-Lado, said Yusuf Buhari’s candidacy enjoys broad acceptance among party members, citing his perceived capacity and connection to the constituency, which includes Daura—his father’s hometown.

Political observers note that the development reflects the continued influence of political legacies in Nigeria, where family ties often play a role in shaping electoral dynamics. It also underscores the importance of Katsina State as a key stronghold of the APC.

Sources within the party further suggest that the move aligns with the political strategy of Governor Dikko Radda, who is believed to be backing Yusuf’s candidacy as part of broader preparations for the 2027 elections.

Analysts say Yusuf Buhari’s potential candidacy could reshape political alignments in the constituency, especially as parties begin early positioning ahead of the polls.
