Security was significantly heightened at the Federal High Court in Kaduna on Tuesday as former governor of the state, Nasir El-Rufai, appeared for the anticipated ruling on his bail application, which was later postponed following new developments in the case.

Armed operatives were deployed across the court premises, restricting access and controlling movement as the high-profile proceedings attracted public and media attention. El-Rufai arrived under heavy security escort, while journalists and observers were kept at a distance as part of precautionary measures.

The case, presided over by Justice Rilwan Aikawa, is linked to corruption-related allegations brought against the former governor by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission. The court had initially scheduled Tuesday for a ruling on his bail application.

However, proceedings were complicated by parallel developments at the Kaduna State High Court earlier in the day. El-Rufai had first appeared before Justice Darius Khobo, where expectations of a bail decision were also deferred. The court adjourned its ruling to April 21 after the anti-corruption agency filed an amended nine-count charge against him.

Speaking after Monday’s session, El-Rufai’s counsel, Ukpong Abang, said the defence team was taken by surprise by the revised charges, which were introduced in court without prior notice. According to him, the prosecution dropped one of the earlier co-defendants, leaving El-Rufai as the sole accused.

“The charges are entirely new to us. We need time to study them before taking any legal steps,” Abang stated, indicating that the defence would review the amended charges before responding.

The legal developments have added a new layer of complexity to a case that has drawn national attention. El-Rufai, who served as Kaduna State governor from 2015 to 2023, remains a prominent political figure within the ruling establishment, and his trial is seen by observers as a significant test of Nigeria’s anti-corruption framework.

The adjournment means the former governor will remain in legal limbo pending the next hearing, as both the Federal and State High Courts consider aspects of the case.

Analysts say the outcome of the bail application could shape the pace of the trial and influence broader public perception of accountability in high-level corruption cases.
