South Africa coach Hugo Broos insisted there were positives to take despite Bafana
Bafana’s 2-0 defeat to World Cup co-hosts Mexico in their opening Group A match.

South Africa’s task was made harder by red cards for Yaya Sithole and Themba
Zwane as they finished the game with nine men.

“I think my team played a good game,” Broos said. “In some moments, Mexico was
desperate in the game, they didn’t know how to find space.”

The Belgian coach admitted his side struggled in possession and paid the price for
costly mistakes that led to both Mexican goals.

“We made two mistakes on our side. In those moments, you don’t have to lose the
ball. We lost the ball, and there was space for Mexico, and they could score twice,”
He said.

Broos also questioned the second dismissal, saying, “I think the Mexican player
fouled my player. But the referee decided something else. It is a bit of a pity we had
to finish the game with nine players.”

Despite the setback, the South Africa coach remains optimistic ahead of next week’s
clash against the Czech Republic.

“If we show the same mentality and play the same way as today, I’m sure we will
have great results in the next two games,” Broos added.
