Bayo Onanuga, a spokesman for President Bola Tinubu, has challenged assertions of widespread hunger in Nigeria, asserting that many citizens are benefiting from the administration’s policies.

In an interview with Arise Television, Onanuga pointed to various government programs and infrastructure initiatives that he believes are yielding real benefits, despite ongoing economic concerns.

He shared a personal experience from a recent journey between Ibadan and Lagos, where he unexpectedly encountered a newly constructed concrete road after diverting from a heavily congested route. “I found myself on a paved road and thought, ‘Wow, when was this built?’” he remarked.

Onanuga also emphasized the importance of the ongoing coastal highway project, which has significantly reduced travel time between Lagos Island and Ajah. “What used to take two hours and thirty minutes now takes just over an hour,” he noted.

Additionally, he highlighted the Federal Government’s student loan scheme and low-interest credit options for civil servants, arguing these initiatives are alleviating financial burdens for many families. “If you’re a parent with four children in university and they can access an interest-free federal loan, aren’t they benefiting?” he questioned.

While acknowledging the existence of economic challenges, Onanuga expressed that public discourse often emphasizes hardship while overlooking positive developments. “I don’t see the level of hunger people are talking about,” he stated.

His comments come amidst ongoing discussions about the implications of the Tinubu administration’s reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the liberalization of foreign exchange, which have led to increased living costs but are framed by the government as essential for long-term economic stability.
