The political landscape in Lagos is heating up ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election, with significant figures already stepping into the spotlight. Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, the current Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has publicly expressed his qualifications for the position, though he claims not to be actively seeking it at this time.

On the other hand, Seyi Tinubu, son of the current president and a former governor, is also rumored to be in the race, with reports of a coalition in Owerri, Imo State endorsing him for the governorship position in Lagos state. However, this endorsement has sparked backlash from a coalition of Lagos indigenous youths who oppose the idea of a non-indigene holding the governorship. Their President, Abdul-Kareem Whyte, articulated their stance, stating that such endorsements are undemocratic and undermine the rights of Lagos indigenes to govern their own state.

The statement further reads “There will soon be a vacancy in Osun State, where Mr. Seyi Tinubu can exercise his democratic rights unhindered. If the people of Owerri in Imo State are impressed by his experience, they can push him to succeed Governor Uzodinma.”

The group is also sending warning signals to those who are quietly seeking Lagos indigene status for the purpose of political position in the state. They vowed to resist moves by non-indigene who may want to manipulate their ways into the Alausa oval office.

The indigenous youths have made it clear that they will resist any attempts by those seeking to gain indigene status for political gain. This situation highlights the complexities of political identity and representation in Lagos, as various groups assert their rights and push back against perceived encroachments on local governance. As the election approaches, it will be interesting to see how these dynamics unfold and influence the broader political narrative in Lagos.
