Namibia has elected its first female president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, representing the SWAPO party, in a historic victory. This milestone was announced by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.

It followed an election that saw a significant voter turnout with Nandi-Ndaitwah securing 57.31% of the votes, surpassing her closest rival, Panduleni Itula of the Independent Patriots for Change, who garnered 25.5%.As a veteran politician, Nandi-Ndaitwah has served in various key roles since Namibia’s independence in 1990, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation.

Her leadership platform emphasizes unity, economic transformation, and youth empowerment. This election victory did not come without its challenges, especially a logistical nightmare during the voting process, which led to extended polling in some regions. Despite these hurdles, her election marks a significant moment for Namibia, furthering its democratic and developmental goals.
