Amid intensifying political dispute in Rivers State, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has reportedly counseled Governor Siminalayi Fubara to take decisive action including shutting down the State House of Assembly and declaring a state of emergency if necessary., Obasanjo, during a closed-door meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt allegedly implored Fubara to assert his authority as the elected Chief Security Officer of the state —warning him against succumbing to external political influence.

“You are the governor, chosen by the people. Your directives must stand—neither Tinubu nor Wike placed you in power,” Obasanjo was quoted as saying. He reportedly advised Fubara to withdraw security operatives from the Assembly, dismantle opposition structures and prevent any impeachment attempts. He also warned against applying foreign democratic models in what he termed a lawless political environment, thereby urging the governor to act firmly to safeguard his mandate.

The former president’s visit is viewed by political observers as a critical intervention in the deepening rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. Analysts cautioned that the advice, if acted upon, could heighten tensions between the Rivers State government and the federal authorities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
