Frank Lampard praised Coventry City’s stunning rise from 17th to fifth under his watch but insisted their Championship playoff qualification is just the beginning of a bigger journey.

Saturday’s 2-0 win over Middlesbrough capped a remarkable turnaround for the Sky Blues, who will now face Sunderland in a two-legged playoff semi-final starting Friday.

Since arriving in November, Lampard has overseen a steady transformation in form and mentality, but the former Chelsea boss was quick to share credit with his coaching staff and players, while warning against complacency.

“We’re not over-celebrating,” he said. “It’s only a start. But from where we were to where we are now, it’s a big achievement.”

Lampard also paid tribute to his predecessor Mark Robins, acknowledging the foundations laid during the former manager’s seven-year spell that saw Coventry rise from League Two and reach last season’s playoff final.

As the Sky Blues prepare for another crack at promotion, Lampard’s measured tone suggests a focused group aiming to go one step further this time.
