Taiwo Awoniyi has regained consciousness after being placed in an induced coma following emergency surgery on a ruptured intestine, sustained during Nottingham Forest’s 2-2 draw with Leicester.
The Nigerian striker collided with the post late in Sunday’s match but initially played on, despite visible discomfort.
With Forest having used all their substitutes, Awoniyi remained on the pitch before being rushed to hospital the next day.
He underwent two stages of surgery, with the second completed on Wednesday before doctors brought him out of the coma.
Forest have launched an internal review, with owner Evangelos Marinakis questioning why the player was allowed to continue after the impact.
The club has already expressed frustration at the medical team’s handling of the situation.
