Lionel Messi struck a sublime free-kick to seal Inter Miami’s first-ever FIFA Club World Cup victory, as they came from behind to beat FC Porto 2-1 in Group A.
The Argentine’s 50th goal for the club arrived just seven minutes after Telasco Segovia had cancelled out Samu Aghehowa’s early penalty.
Porto had taken the lead in Atlanta after a VAR review penalised Noah Allen, with Samu converting despite Óscar Ustari’s best efforts.
But Javier Mascherano’s side responded after the break, first through Segovia’s crisp finish, before Messi curled in a trademark set-piece to complete the turnaround.
Porto pushed for a late equaliser, but Miami held firm to move second in the group behind Palmeiras, while Porto remain winless ahead of their final clash with Al Ahly.
