Defending champion Jannik Sinner recovered from a set down to beat Canada’s Denis Shapovalov 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 and book his place in the US Open fourth round.
The 24-year-old Italian, world number one, extended his unbeaten run at hard-court Grand Slams to 24 matches, a streak that includes back-to-back Australian Open titles and last year’s crown at Flushing Meadows.
Shapovalov made the brighter start, punishing Sinner’s early double faults to take the opening set, but Sinner responded with trademark composure.
He levelled the contest in the second set and then stormed back from 0-3 down in the third to reel off six straight games, seizing control.
Sinner broke again in the fourth set as frustrations boiled over for Shapovalov, before calmly closing out the match to seal victory on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
He will face either Tommy Paul or Alexander Bublik next.
“Week two is completely different,” Sinner said after the win. “I’m happy to be here again, it’s a special place for me. Let’s see what’s coming.”
