American conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk, has been shot dead. He was killed during a campus event in Utah, United States.
The 31-year-old was addressing students at Utah Valley University on Tuesday when gunfire erupted. Witnesses said he was struck in the neck while speaking on stage at his “American Comeback Tour” programme.
Emergency responders rushed Kirk to Timpanogos Regional Hospital where he was confirmed dead.
The Utah State Police said arrests were initially made at the scene but those detained were later cleared of involvement. Authorities are continuing investigations to identify and apprehend the shooter.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox condemned the incident, describing it as a “political assassination,” while several U.S. leaders expressed shock and concern over the rising trend of violence against public figures.
Kirk, who co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012, was a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump and a popular face in conservative political circles.
His death has sparked outrage across the political divide in America.
