The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has declared that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara is owed six months of service time, which they say was unlawfully taken from him during his suspension from office.

The opposition coalition argued that Fubara’s removal from office following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State was unconstitutional and an affront to democracy.

In a statement issued by CUPP spokesperson, Comrade Mark Adebayo, the coalition likened Fubara’s case to that of governors who were wrongfully impeached but later reinstated and allowed to complete their constitutionally mandated terms.

“Governor Fubara was duly elected to serve four years, and the six months stolen from him must be returned,” Adebayo said, describing Tinubu’s actions as a reckless abuse of power.

CUPP further warned that it will not stand by while what it called “the antidemocratic and dictatorial tendencies of a few power-hungry politicians” erode Nigeria’s democracy.

“It is shameful that those who once claimed to be champions of democracy are now using the instruments of power to subvert it,” Adebayo said, accusing President Tinubu of becoming the very thing he once fought against as governor and pro-democracy activist.
